UNWANTED PETS:
The Shelter provides a 24-hour drop off facility located at the Animal Control Shelter next to the Parish Maintenance Barn on Bayou Road in Plaquemine. To surrender an animal, you must sign an owner release and provide proof of residency. There is no fee for this service.
Types of Complaints and who to call
Wildlife on property - Call the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries at 225-765-2800 or 1-800-442-2511. Business hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Bees - To report bees near houses call: Dean Wilson at 225-659-2499; LSU Cooperative Extension Agent Jim Dunkley at 225-925-7772; or Beekeeper Bob Fryierson at 226-664-6956. To eliminate carpenter bees use wasp spray to kill or mix honey with seven dust and put in a high place. Keep this mixture away from children and pets.
Wasps or other insects - Call an exterminator.
Disposal of dead animals - The animal should be placed in a garbage bag and placed in regular garbage pick-up. BFI will pick up dead animals in garbage bags.
Dead animals - It is the animal owner’s responsibility to dispose of any dead animal on his/her property. To report dead animals on parish roads, call the Animal Control Shelter at 225-687-5881. To report dead animals on state highways, call 225-687-3019 on the west bank or 225-675-5315 on the east bank, or call the Shelter.
Animal cruelty - Animal cruelty should be reported to the Shelter at 225-687-5881. Physical abuse of animals in progress, including organized dog fighting, constitutes an emergency.
Dog and cat traps - Dog and cat trap requests are handled on a first come, first served basis. There is no charge to the property owner to have a trap put on property. It is the property owner’s responsibility to bait and set the traps, and instructions are provided with the traps. To request a trap, call the Shelter at 225-687-5881.
Snakes - If a snake is discovered in a residence, call the Shelter at 225-687-5881. Someone in the residence must be able to show the Animal Control Officer the location of the snake when the officer arrives. The Animal Control Officer is not allowed to move any furniture within a residence.
Dog and cat bites - Report dog or cat bites to the Shelter at 225-687-5881 during business hours. If after business hours, call 911.
Stray animals - If the animal is friendly, tie it up or put in a pen, call the Shelter and an Animal Control Officer will pick it up. If the animal is roaming the area, call and request a trap.
Livestock at large - Report any livestock not in a restricted area to the Shelter at 225-687-5881 during business hours. If after business hours, call 911.
